As well as being the definitive source of state insurance regulations, you state insurance commissionaire may the best sources for company and agent licensing information, agent recommendations and fraud alerts.

You may be able to ask your state insurance department specific questions about a provider:

  • Whether or not the company is licensed;
  • The length of time for which the company has been licensed;
  • The complaint statistic, including the number complaints brought against a company;

About 30 states offer an insurance provider rate comparison for various sample driver profiles, that may be a valuable shopping guide even for drivers outside of the state. Some providers listed may not be available in your state, but still may be useful reference points.

Insuance Company Complaint Stats

The National Association of Insurance Commisioners maintains a database of insurance company information, including the number of complaints a given company has received.  The graph depicts the relative number of complaints compared to a national average of 1.0.

There’s plenty of other insurance company data including licensing and financial information  available at the NAIC site.

NAIC Note: The company’s “Total Complaints” are divided by the sum of the complaints of all companies under the policy type for the calendar year. This calculation provides the company’s “Complaint Share” of all complaints, nation-wide, under the policy type for the calendar year.
Global Receivership Information Database is a voluntary database provided by the state insurance departments to report information on insurer receiverships for consumers, claimants, and guaranty funds.

These statistics represent complaints that reached the state level and have been ‘closed’.

These numbers may not be the definitive word in some cases. GMAC Online’s total number of complaints was 14,  the 4.42 complaint factor would be effected significantly by 1 more or less complaint. (GMAC providing .01% of U.S. market share)

Some companies had multiple divisions? that were reported on separately. Progressive had 2 other divisions with smaller market shares not shown on the graph.  Progressive Cas Ins Co rating was 2.35 , while Progressive Advanced Ins Co rating was 0.52.
